ECMO is the use of extracorporeal circuit and gas exchange to provide temporary life support in patients with reversible pulmonary or cardiac failure.
What is ECMO?
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, is a therapy that adds oxygen to your loved one’s blood and pumps it through their body like the heart. The process takes place outside the body.
ECMO is like a heart-lung machine used in heart surgery and can be used for longer periods of time. ECMO temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs so they can rest and heal.
ECMO is used when usual treatments are not working. ECMO does not cure heart or lung disease, it only provides time for the patient’s heart or lungs to heal.

ECMO Retrieval & Transport
The safe management of an ECMO retrieval patient requires a coordinated response by the referring and receiving hospitals, ECMO team, ambulance and the medical retrieval services.
Potential ECMO referrals should be discussed between physicians at the referral centre and intensivists, anaesthetists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and respiratory physicians at the ECMO centre. Telephone, email and web conference can be used to communicate and discuss patient details (such as Doppler-echocardiography, ventilator settings, blood results and imaging) and medical management.
